#1 “My Feet can’t Touch the Ground!”
Do you struggle to place your feet on the ground while getting into the downward dog pose? Or are you too scared to try out a headstand due to fear of falling over?
Contrary to popular belief, yoga props aren't just for beginners! Even seasoned practitioners find props such as yoga blocks useful in discovering the depths of each pose.
Common yoga props include blocks, belts, walls, and wheels. Let’s find out why you should get some props before your next yoga session.
#2 Why Should I Use Yoga Props?
Maintain proper alignment Yoga poses may turn out messy if you are unable to ensure perfect alignment. Especially during twists, openers, and bends, props such as yoga blocks can help you achieve more balanced alignment. When you struggle to hold a pose, blocks can help you minimize muscular effort instead of compromising on alignment. For instance, you could use blocks to rest your hands on while keeping your shoulders aligned in the camel pose.
Improve stability Using props makes it easier to hold poses for a longer time, and place more focus on breathing. Props also help you understand which parts of your body need more working on, based on your difficulty to stretch certain muscles.
Protect yourself from injuries Props like the yoga belt help you move deeper into poses without causing too much strain if your muscles are untrained. If you already have prior injuries, blocks can help you safely practice poses that might otherwise damage your injured limbs or joints. For instance, you could use a yoga belt in the One-legged pigeon pose, to stretch your leg forward if you’re unable to reach it with your arm.
#3 Ready to start using yoga props?
Remember, using yoga props doesn’t make you a weak practitioner! Props help you work with your abilities to make the best out of your yoga practice, and can help you advance further until you perfect these poses on your own.
